In October 2021, the parent company of Facebook changed its name from Facebook, Inc., to Meta Platforms, Inc. in order to reflect its newfound focus of developing within the metaverse realm.
For many, including BRON team members, this sparked a conversation about the concept of a metaverse environment. According to Raven Roberts, BRON’s Jr. Architectural Designer and metaverse pioneer, the metaverse is a virtual reality space accessed by anyone with a virtual reality headset.
Innovation is a core value at BRON, so it was no surprise when our forward-thinking Managing Principals agreed to purchase a pair of Oculus glasses to explore the metaverse. The immersive experience was more than we imagined.
The metaverse makes use of virtual reality and augmented reality. According to Raven, “virtual reality is fully immersed, while augmented reality is when you are in both the virtual world and the physical world.” Timeout.com describes it as “a place where the real world meets the virtual, it’s both synthetic and somewhere users can interact in real-time.” As the world adapts more and more to the virtual world, much like the internet, only time will tell where it goes.
There are many universes within the metaverse, each requiring different components to access it. “Think of the metaverse like our universe,” Raven explained. “We live on planet earth but there are also other planets. Things like Roblox or Horizons each have their own planet and how you access them will depend on the part of the metaverse you want to explore.”
Whether it be a game, a virtual workspace, or a digital party, each avenue can offer a different experience.
The metaverse is a part of the future because it allows people from all over the world to gather in virtual spaces, much like chat rooms did in the early 90s, except that virtual reality utilizes more of the human senses, heightening the connections made. People are therefore using the metaverse to customize cities, meet others, buy virtual property, trade currencies and NFTs, and even learn skills and knowledge that’ll be useful in the real non-digital world. The Government of Barbados has even announced its plan to establish the first embassy in Decentraland, a metaverse space that features concerts and shopping.
Currently, over 400 million people are active in the metaverse, making the potential for digital creation – enormous. With so much happening in the space, BRON saw the opportunity to explore all options.
In the initial stages of implementation into service offerings, BRON has utilized Raven’s skills as a draftsman to create models and renderings that clients can see in the metaverse!
Moving into 2023, we hope to continue the expansion of these offerings, finding new ways to connect with our team and customers and reach even more clients globally.
